Autism

The Autistic Child

Autism (sometimes called “classical autism”) is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females.

How To Help Them?

Helping an autistic child can be frustrating because they need continuous, intensive and multifaceted assistance।

Step 1 : Make your child a part of your family, not the center of it। No child benefits from all of his parents' attention.

Step 2 : Provide consistency। Your autistic child needs you to establish a set routine that he can count on every day. If you feel disorganized, if you are trying to juggle too many balls, your autistic child will respond to this confusion with bizarre behaviors.

Step 3 : Use the same set of words every time you reward him, likewise when you reprimand him. Autistic children do not learn well from experience। Often each event is a completely new occurrence to the child, even if the exact same thing happened yesterday.

Step 4 : Use behavior modification to correct undesirable behaviors। Use tangible rewards to increase motivation. You should provide 10 praise statements for every one corrective statement.

Step 5 : Notice your child's cues to stop a misbehavior before it occurs। A child might whine, or begin avoiding eye contact.

Step 6 : Pay attention to his warning signs, give him a basic instruction, guide him through the task nonchalantly, and then praise him।

Step7 : Describe what you are going to do to your autistic child beforehand, since autistic children are easily confused by change।

Step 8 : Find the best educational program available to fit your child's special needs। Early intervention programs offer special education for autistic children that are not yet of school age.

Step 9 : Contact your local school district or health department, or ask your pediatrician about preschool and all-day school programs available in your area

Appendix 5 - The Mascot

Here, what we have read about the mascot. There is a teacher, Mrs Clem, and trainee teacher, Ms Cathy Anderson.

In this appendix, Mrs Clem is a mentor for Ms. Cathy Anderson who was task to do assignment on 8 weeks student placement, where they do teach and plan a lesson on their own.

From the starting, Mrs Clem didn't want Cathy to take the teaching process. She just confined her as a serving line leader during recess or lunch. The reluctant Mrs. Clem goes on until the third week and yet still no sign that she will let Cathy to teach on her own. Mrs Clem only give Cathy to teach on the spot when she has other things to do. This make Cathy feels like unprofessional, where she didn't informed earlier and will make the learning process not effective.

Once, Mrs Clem and Ms Anderson misunderstanding about sex education and Ms AAnderson tried to correct her. More than one, Mrs Clem change the schedule until the had agreed on specific lesson plans.

On the fourth week, Mrs Clem recommend Cathy to teach a lesson using the science kit. The past experiences made her to be careful as the lesson will not exactly as she's plan. On the day before she taught, cCathy and Mrs Clem went on Science Workshop where they brought the Science Kit. But they didn't use it.

On the day Ms Caty Anderson on her teaching, she reminded Mrs Clem to brought back the Science Kit as she will use them.

During the class, she again faced troublesome where she wrongly pick students to take the science kit. Mrs Clem prefered Jabar but Cathy wanted Juny to take it with her. This make things worst where Jabar behave badly in the class. He disturbed others during the task given and making noisy.

At last, Mrs Clem yelling at Jabar as he leaving the classroom. Ms Cathy told her that if she didn't got in the class he will lost his recess time. That made him to follow Ms Cathy to got in the class again.
